Memorial Stele of Gongnimsa Temple, Goesan
괴산 공림사 사적비 · 槐山 空林寺 事蹟碑

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThe memorial stele of Gongnimsa Temple was erected in 1688, the 14th year of King Sukjong, and stands at the foot of a hill behind the meditation-hall building within the temple grounds. A granite pedestal carved with a lotus motif rests on a square base stone, on which stands a marble stele body 177 cm high, 90 cm wide and 38.5 cm thick, topped with a stele cap shaped like a hipped-and-gabled roof. Inscriptions cover all four faces. The text on the front does not continue directly into the other faces; the inscriptions on the left and right sides appear to continue the list of donors on the back, though it seems that donors who contributed at different times were added afterwards. The text was composed by the monk Seok Gyeong-il, written out by Heoam, and rendered in seal script by Jo Yeong. The front records the origins and history of Gongnimsa Temple and the circumstances of the stele's erection, and was written in the third month of the 27th year of the Kangxi reign era [1688]. The remaining three faces list the names of donors, monks, the abbot and the engravers. Because its inscription survives intact, this memorial stele is valued as important material for understanding the society and local affairs of the mid-Joseon period.
