Samgujeong Pavilion
삼구정 · 三龜亭

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis pavilion was built in 1496, the second year of Yeonsangun's reign, by Kim Yeong-su (1446-1502), who had served as Jangnyeong of the Saheonbu (Office of the Inspector-General), so as to bring joy to his aged mother, then 88 years old. It has since been repaired several times and was rebuilt in 1947, giving it the form it retains today. The name Samgujeong comes from three rocks in the pavilion's yard shaped like turtles - one of the ten symbols of longevity - and appears to have been chosen to celebrate his mother's long life. The building has three bays across the front and two bays to the side, with a hipped-and-gabled roof whose side profile resembles the character for 'eight'. All four sides are left open, so that the surrounding scenery adds to its charm.
