Yeongsan Local Confucian School

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krA hyanggyo is an educational institution built by the state to hold memorial rites for eminent Confucian scholars and to provide Confucian education and moral instruction to local people. It is not known when Yeongsan Hyanggyo was first built, but it was rebuilt during the reign of King Jungjong (r. 1506–1544) and has continued in that form to the present. The complex consists of the entrance gate, Punghwamun, the lecture hall Myeongnyundang and the east and west dormitories where students studied, and the shrine, Daeseongjeon. Myeongnyundang stands at the front and Daeseongjeon at the rear, following the typical hyanggyo layout of school in front and shrine behind. Unusually, however, Myeongnyundang and Daeseongjeon are set some distance apart, and Daeseongjeon lacks the east and west seomu, the auxiliary shrine buildings. In the Joseon period the school received land, books, and servants from the state and used them to teach students, but since the Gabo Reform of 1894 it has held only memorial rites. Yeongsan Hyanggyo is a site of long history that provides much valuable material for research into the local history of the region, and with a traditional house standing before it, the surrounding scenery is beautiful as well.
