These are woodblocks carved with the collected works of Kim In-hu (pen name Ha Seo, 1510-1560), a scholar active in the reign of King Injong of Joseon. Kim In-hu passed the state civil examination in 1540 and went on to hold posts including Munwon Bujeongja and, within the Hongmungwan (Office of Special Advisers), Doctor (bakhsa) and Deputy Section Chief (busuchan), as well as Magistrate of Okgwa County. He excelled in poetry and prose, leaving behind more than ten volumes of collected works, though he wrote comparatively little on Neo-Confucian philosophy (dohak). He was also well versed in astronomy, geography, medicine and mathematics, and his students included Jeong Cheol and Jo Hui-mun. After his death he was enshrined at Piramseowon Confucian Academy in Jangseong and at Yeonggwiseowon in Okgwa, among other academies, and was given the posthumous title "Munjeong." Eight years after his death, his works were first published in 1568, the first year of King Seonjo; a revised edition followed in 1686, the twelfth year of King Sukjong, and a third edition was published between 1797 and 1802. The first edition survives as a single woodblock, the revised edition as 258 woodblocks, and the third edition as 391 woodblocks, for a total of 650. Beyond the importance of Kim In-hu's writing itself, the set is highly valuable because the blocks span such an early period of carving and none has been lost. They are currently held at Piramseowon Confucian Academy in Jangseong, South Jeolla Province.
