This Buddha statue stood near a high peak of Mireuksan Mountain, lying exposed in the woods behind it, and was retrieved in the 1970s and set up at its present site as a standing statue of Shakyamuni Buddha, 180 cm in total height. Atop the bald head rises a large topknot-shaped protrusion, and the face is full and rounded, with the eyes, nose and mouth skilfully carved. The ears are not especially long, but three distinct folds are clearly marked on the neck. The robe, which covers both shoulders, is rendered with thick folds across the chest and flows down from both arms to the knees in a U-shape. The right hand is raised to chest height with the palm facing outward, thumb and middle finger joined; the left hand is lowered slightly below the navel with the palm facing upward, the wrist and fingers rendered softly. Overall well proportioned, with an outstanding rendering of the full, rounded face and the folds of the robe, this is an early Goryeo stone Buddha and is valued as important material for studying the production of Buddhist images in the Jincheon region.
