Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThese are woodblocks engraved with documents relating to Kim In-hu (1510–1560), sobriquet Haseo, a scholar of the Joseon dynasty; there are 56 blocks in all. Kim In-hu passed the civil service examination in 1540 and, beginning with the post of munwon bujeongja, a junior clerical post, went on to serve as an erudite and as second copyist of the Hongmungwan (Office of Special Advisors) and as magistrate of Okgwa County. He excelled at poetry and prose and left more than ten volumes of collected writings, though he wrote comparatively little on Neo-Confucian philosophy. He was also well versed in astronomy, geography, medicine and mathematics, and counted Jeong Cheol and Jo Huimun among his disciples. After his death he was enshrined at Piramseowon Confucian Academy in Jangseong and at Yeonggwiseowon Confucian Academy in Okgwa, and was given the posthumous title Munjeong. The set comprises 18 blocks of the cursive-script Thousand Character Classic and 18 blocks of the Nine Songs of Wuyi in regular script, engraved in 1610, the second year of King Gwanghaegun; 13 blocks of Baengnyeon chohae, a commentary on a hundred verses, and 4 blocks of Yumuk, engraved in 1568, the first year of King Seonjo; and 3 blocks of ink bamboo paintings bestowed on Kim In-hu by King Injong, engraved in 1568, the first year of King Seonjo, and in 1770, the 46th year of King Yeongjo. Kim In-hu's cursive script, based on the style of the Chinese calligrapher Yan Zhenqing, became a standard model of fine writing among Neo-Confucian scholars of the time, especially those of the Honam region. Baengnyeon chohae, which glosses one hundred verses in Hangul, is the earliest-dated of all Hangul editions of this text, and the ink bamboo painting blocks, carved in King Injong's own calligraphic style, are highly valued for showing the historical development of woodblock carving.
