Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThese are the woodblocks used to print the Gieon, the 93-volume, 25-book collected writings of Heo Mok (pen name Misu, 1595-1682), a scholar-official of the reign of King Sukjong of Joseon. The blocks were carved in 1689, the fifteenth year of King Sukjong's reign, and number 861 in total. At the age of twenty-three, Heo Mok studied under Jeong Gu, and he held the scholarship of Toegye (Yi Hwang) in high regard. Through this, he received Toegye's scholarly tradition from his teacher Jeong Gu, and that tradition was in turn carried on and developed further by Yi Ik. The woodblocks reveal the achievements of Heo Mok, who was learned in the study of ritual propriety (yehak). Being of considerable age yet in excellent condition, with none of the blocks missing, they are of great value. They are currently kept at Micheonseowon, a Confucian academy in Naju, South Jeolla Province.
