A hyanggyo was a national educational institution established in the provinces, where education was carried out alongside rites honouring sages and worthies. When Jinnam County was separated from Goseong County in 1900, the fourth year of the Gwangmu era under Emperor Gojong of Joseon, this school split off from Goseong Hyanggyo and was built at its present location in 1901. It follows the "hall of learning in front, shrine behind" layout: the Myeongnyundang lecture hall and the eastern and western dormitories stand at the front for study, while the Daeseongjeon shrine hall and its eastern and western auxiliary shrines (dongmu and seomu) stand at the rear for the rites. The Daeseongjeon enshrines Confucius, his disciples, and various Korean sages and worthies. The other buildings include the Punghwaru, the main gate; the Naesammun, the entrance gate to the shrine precinct; and the Jegigo, a storehouse for the vessels used in the rites. During the Joseon dynasty the school received land, books and slaves from the state to support the teaching of students, but since the Gabo Reform of 1894 it has performed only the memorial rites.
