Artefacts held at Gamgok Cathedral, Eumseong
KOGL Type 1Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

These are artefacts held at Gamgok Cathedral in Eumseong: a Sacred Heart of Jesus banner (106 x 173 cm) and a Sacred Heart of Mary banner (106 x 177 cm), two items in total. Both banners were made using Asian-style embroidery on silk for use at the first Corpus Christi procession in 1914 and at the annual feast of the Immaculate Heart of Mary. The front is embroidered in relief, expressing devotion to the Eucharist by depicting Jesus Christ protected within the Host; the state of preservation is not particularly good. The two banners are still used every October at the Cheongju Diocese's Eucharistic Congress. Because of their unusual form, scale and ritual use, they are rare material for research into early Korean Catholicism and into embroidery techniques.
