Haenam Gosan Posthumous Works Woodblocks (set)
KOGL Type 1Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

These are woodblocks carved with the collected poetry and prose of Yun Seon-do (pen name Gosan, 1587-1671), a mid-Joseon official and celebrated sijo poet. They comprise 268 woodblocks for the Gosan Yugo (Posthumous Works of Gosan), 7 woodblocks for the Gosan Yusa, and 30 woodblocks for the Gosan Seonsaeng Yeonbo (Chronological Biography of Gosan), among others. At the age of eight, Yun Seon-do was adopted by his uncle and moved to live in Haenam. At twenty he placed first in the seungbosi examination, and in 1616, as a student of Seonggyungwan (the national Confucian academy), he submitted a memorial criticising the ruling faction and was exiled to Hamgyeong Province. After giving up his official career, he used the great fortune inherited from his ancestors to build a number of pavilions and halls, unconnected with politics, at Buyong-dong on Bogildo Island and at the newly discovered Geumswaedong, where he lived enjoying a life of refined leisure. The woodblocks were carved in 1796, the twentieth year of King Jeongjo, and again at the end of the 19th century; none is missing, and the posthumous works collection includes gasa poems written in the Korean script. They are currently housed at the Yun Gosan Relics Exhibition Hall in Haenam, South Jeolla Province.
