Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krA giyeonghoedo is a painting depicting a gathering of the Giroso, an honorary body composed of senior civil officials aged seventy or older. This particular painting was made after No Su-sin (1515–1590), a scholar-official of the mid-Joseon period, joined the Giroso. Gatherings of the Giroso were held for refined enjoyment and fellowship among its members; the practice began in the Goryeo period and became widely popular during the Joseon period. In its early stages such gatherings were mainly held in the mountains or by riversides, but from the sixteenth century onward the venue moved indoors. A painter would be brought to the gathering to produce a painting for each participant, one copy to be kept by each family. On the painting were recorded not only the scene of the gathering itself but also a title naming the gathering and the names, pen names and official posts of the participants, offering a glimpse of the life of Joseon literati at the time as well as carrying scholarly significance.
