This rock-carved standing Buddha stands at Saseongam Hermitage in Muncheok-myeon, Gurye-gun, Jeollanam-do, and measures 3.9 metres in total height. Saseongam is said to have been a substantial centre of Buddhist practice from the 8th to the 13th century. The Buddha's head bears a broad, low topknot-shaped hair bun. The robe covers both shoulders, and the drapery folds at the left shoulder form a dense lattice pattern, giving it a somewhat unusual appearance. The right hand rests above the chest, while the left hand is held below the chest as if supporting something. A halo is carved behind the figure, and around the head is a circular halo bordered by two lines. The halo bears flame and scroll-vine patterns similar to those on the Rock-carved Seated Buddha of Golguram Hermitage in Gyeongju. Carved throughout in a simplified incised technique, the statue is presumed to date from the late 9th to early 10th century.
