This is a statue of Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva enshrined in the Ten Kings Hall of Ssanggyesa Temple, in Sacheon-ri, Uisin-myeon, Jindo-gun, South Jeolla Province. Ksitigarbha is the bodhisattva who vows never to become a Buddha until all beings suffering in hell have been saved, and is characteristically shown bald-headed and wearing a hood. The Ten Kings Hall of Ssanggyesa Temple on Jindo Island now houses 33 wooden statues in all, centred on the seated main image of Ksitigarbha. The Ten Kings sit on chairs, while all the other figures stand; every statue is gilded. They are on the whole well preserved, though four of the thirty-three were restored at a later date. In 1993, while the Ksitigarbha Triad was being repaired, an inscription was found inside the statue of Domyeong-jonja, an attendant of Ksitigarbha, recording that it had been made in 1666, the seventh year of King Hyeonjong of Joseon. The statues of Ssanggyesa Temple's Ten Kings Hall are well preserved and their exact date of production is known, giving them considerable value as cultural heritage; stylistically they may be considered representative of mid-seventeenth-century sculpture.
