Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krA hyanggyo is an educational institution established by the state to enshrine the spirit tablets of Confucian sages, hold memorial rites for them, and oversee education in the local region. The date of Namhae Hyanggyo's first construction is unknown, but in 1669, the tenth year of King Hyeonjong of Joseon, the shrine hall Daeseongjeon was rebuilt. Later, in 1892, the twenty-ninth year of Emperor Gojong, Daeseongjeon, together with the east and west annex shrine halls and the inner gate Naesammun, was moved to its present site, and the other buildings were gradually relocated there as well. On a gently sloping site, the outer gate Oesammun, the east and west student dormitories, and the lecture hall Myeongnyundang stand on comparatively low ground, while behind them, on slightly higher ground, stand the inner gate Naesammun and Daeseongjeon, where rites are held for the Confucian sages, forming the typical hyanggyo layout of lecture halls at the front and shrine at the rear. While the arrangement of the buildings is typical, the stone platform built against the wall on the south side of the west dormitory is an unusual feature not found at other hyanggyo.
