This is the memorial stupa of State Preceptor Wonjin at Bulhoesa Temple in Naju. State Preceptor Wonjin (1171–1221) became a monk at the age of thirteen, travelled widely among famous mountains to cultivate himself, and was later summoned by the king to serve as abbot of Bogyeongsa Temple. When he passed away at the age of fifty-one, King Gojong honoured him as State Preceptor and bestowed on him the posthumous title "Wonjin". Although the uppermost part of the stupa is partly missing, the base and the body and roof stones above it are well preserved. An inscription on the front records the subject of the stupa and the date of its erection. Built in 1317, the fourth year of King Chungsuk of Goryeo, this stupa has a securely known construction date and holds important academic and historical value for understanding the changes in stupa style at the end of the Goryeo period.
