Chogyehyanggyo Local Confucian School
초계향교 · 草溪鄕校

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krA hyanggyo is a local educational institution established by the state to hold memorial rites for eminent Confucian scholars and to provide Confucian education and moral instruction to local people. Chogyehyanggyo was founded in 1628, the sixth year of King Injo of Joseon, and was moved to its present site in the early 1800s. The surviving buildings include Punghwaru Gate, the entrance gate; Myeongnyundang Hall, where lessons were held, together with the east and west dormitories; and Daeseongjeon Shrine, together with the east and west Seomu shrines. The buildings are arranged with Myeongnyundang Hall at the front and Daeseongjeon Shrine at the rear, a "hall in front, shrine behind" layout. During the Joseon dynasty the school received land, books and servants from the state and used them to teach students, but since the Gabo Reform of 1894 it has held only memorial rites.
