Guest House, Changnyeong

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThe Guest House was a local government building of the Joseon period, where the county magistrate enshrined the king's spirit tablet and performed ceremonial rites; it comprised a central hall (jeongdang) for that purpose together with left and right wings (jwaheon and uheon) where officials dispatched from the central government would stay. The date of its construction is unknown. In 1924 the county magistrate Yi Jang-hui moved it to Suljeong-ri in Changnyeong-eup for use as a marketplace building, and in 1988 it was relocated to its present site at Manokjeong and repaired. It is a single-storey building three bays wide at the front and three bays deep, with a gable roof whose side profile resembles the Chinese character for "person" (人). It stands directly on its stone platform with no separate floor laid, and no walls were built between the columns, so that the surrounding scenery can be seen. On every side except the front, two horizontal timbers were fitted between the columns so that blinds or folding screens could easily be hung during ceremonies, and no iron nails were used anywhere in the building. Judging from its architectural style, the building is presumed to date from the late Joseon period.
