Yeongyang Samgujeong Pavilion
영양삼구정 · 英陽三龜亭

This pavilion was built by Yonggye O Heup (1576–1641). When King Injo concluded a humiliating peace treaty during the Manchu invasion of 1636, O Heup, indignant at this, built a thatched pavilion at the foot of Banwolsan Mountain in Daecheon-ri and lived there. After his death, his descendants rebuilt it as a tile-roofed building. In front of the pavilion stand three rocks side by side, whose shape resembles turtles carrying a house on their backs, and so the pavilion was named Samgujeong ("Three Turtles Pavilion"). The building measures three kan across the front and three kan along the side, with a hip-and-gable (paljak) roof whose side profile resembles the character "八". Dating from the mid-Joseon period, the building has undergone some repairs but still retains its old character; as one of the oldest pavilions in Yeongyang County, it commands very beautiful surroundings.
