Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThese woodblocks were carved to print a collection of the poetry and prose of Gwon Do (1575–1644), pen name Donggye, a civil official of the mid-Joseon period. Gwon Do passed the augmented state examination (jeunggwangsi) in the autumn of his thirty-ninth year and thereafter entered government service, holding a range of posts both in the capital and in the provinces. The woodblocks were produced in 1809, the ninth year of King Sunjo, and comprise a complete set of eight volumes (gwon). The preface was written by Jeong Jong-no, pen name Imjae, and the postface by Kim Goeng. Volumes 1 and 2 contain poetry (si); volume 3 contains elegies (man) and rhyme-prose (bu), a form closer to prose than poetry; volume 4 contains royal edicts (gyoseo), memorials (so), audience replies (dapsa) and reports to the throne (gyesa); volume 5 contains letters (seo); volume 6 contains miscellaneous writings (japseo), admonitions (chim), examination essay questions (chaengmun), and formal congratulatory documents (pyojeon and jeonmun); volume 7 contains prayer texts (chukmun), memorial addresses (jemun), tombstone inscriptions (myogal), grave memorials (myeongji) and biographical accounts (haengjang); and volume 8 contains an appendix and a chronological biography (yeonbo). Because it brings together such a wide range of writings, this set of woodblocks is valued as a good source for studying the state of local rural society at the time.
