Gunghyeondang Hall was originally the seon (meditation) hall of Beopjusa Temple, later reconstructed. According to the surviving ridge-beam inscription, the seon hall of Gunghyeondang was dismantled after falling into disrepair and rebuilt in the 'sungjeong gi-won-sa im-ja' year — that is, in 1852, the third year of King Cheoljong of Joseon. The inscription is especially valuable for recording the names of the monks then residing at Beopjusa and of the carpenters who built the hall. Gunghyeondang stands to the right of Palsangjeon Hall (a National Treasure). The building originally took the form of a single, south-facing straight range of four bays across the front and four bays deep, but it now consists of an east-facing range of fourteen bays across the front and three bays deep joined to the earlier range, so that the whole forms an L shape. It is relatively well preserved and was substantially repaired in 1998; the building covers an area of 383 square metres. Old photographs in the Joseon gojeok dobo (Illustrated Survey of Joseon Antiquities) confirm that the building was originally a single straight range. Formed by joining two ranges into an L shape, this building retains a documented ridge-beam inscription and is a relatively well-preserved structure of the Joseon period, giving it high value for preservation.
