Gueumjae Hall, Hapcheon
합천 구음재 · 陜川 龜陰齋

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krGueumjae Hall was built in 1573, the sixth year of King Seonjo, by Soyodang Yun Eon-rye for scholarship and the training of younger students. The present building was rebuilt in 1810, the tenth year of King Sunjo. Yun Eon-rye was a Confucian scholar of King Seonjo's reign in Joseon who actively took part in righteous-army (uibyeong) activities in support of General Gwak Jae-u. The building has five bays across the front and three bays deep, with a gabled roof whose side profile forms the shape of the character 人. It consists of a U-shaped main hall combined with a straight range of servants' quarters, and a rectangular pond at the entrance harmonises the building with its natural surroundings. A jaesil (a hall for tending ancestral graves and holding memorial rites) is generally centred on those functions, but Gueumjae is distinctive in having a jangpangak — a hall for storing printing woodblocks — a feature not commonly found in such halls.
