Seochongdaechillimyeon Assembly Painting
서총대친림연회도 · 瑞蔥臺親臨宴會圖

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis painting depicts the scene of a banquet held at the Seochongdae Terrace in Changdeokgung Palace on the nineteenth day of the ninth month of 1560, the fifteenth year of King Myeongjong of Joseon, when the king summoned officials who had passed the civil and military state examinations. The composition is divided into three horizontal sections. The uppermost section bears the title of the painting, "Chongdaechillimyeondo" (Painting of the Royal Visit and Banquet at Chongdae), together with a realistic depiction of the banquet scene. The middle section carries a text written by Hong Seom, who was then serving as Left State Councillor of the Uijeongbu (State Council). The lower section records the names of the seventy-four civil and military officials who attended the banquet. This banquet is also recorded in the Annals of King Myeongjong. According to the annals, the king himself set the subject for poems composed at the banquet; the civil officials wrote poetry while the military officials demonstrated their skill in archery, and the king rewarded the company with wine and food and, according to performance, with prizes such as tiger skins and horses. The following day the officials gathered again and asked the Ministry of Rites to have the scene painted in commemoration; the painting was completed four years later, in 1564, the nineteenth year of King Myeongjong. Although the depiction is simplified and schematic, so that little artistic merit can be found in the painting itself, it is valuable both as a realistic record of a banquet personally attended and hosted by the king and as a genuine work from the mid-sixteenth century combining painting and writing.
