A Vulture Peak Assembly painting depicts the assembly at which Sakyamuni Buddha preached on Vulture Peak in India. The Vulture Peak Assembly Painting in the Daeungjeon Hall of Chiljangsa Temple, Anseong, is composed in two registers, upper and lower. In the upper register are placed the Sakyamuni triad and their attendant retinue; along the boundary between the upper and lower registers are placed Bodhisattva Cundi and Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva; and in the lower register, Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva, Mahasthamaprapta Bodhisattva and the Four Heavenly Kings are arranged side by side. The halo of Sakyamuni Buddha, seated in the lotus position on a blue lotus pedestal at the centre of the composition, is winnowing-basket-shaped, whereas the head and body halos of the flanking Manjusri and Samantabhadra bodhisattvas are both circular, marking a difference in rank. On the silk ground, green and red are used as the principal colours, with blue, white and yellow as subsidiary colours. The partial use of blue in the empty spaces of the composition and in the folds of the figures' robes reflects a colouring technique that was popular in the nineteenth century. According to the production record at the lower centre of the painting, this Buddhist painting was made in 1886 with the participation of Geumgok Yeonghwan, Hanbong Changyeop, Wan-o, Bongsun and Seongjeon, among others.
