Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krHangnokjeongsa was built in 1750, the twenty-sixth year of King Yeongjo, to honour the achievements of Yi Gwang-jun (pen name Hakdong, 1531–1609) and to train later generations of scholars. Yi Gwang-jun was a civil official of the mid-Joseon period who entered government service in 1561, the sixteenth year of King Myeongjong. He raised a righteous army during the Japanese invasions of 1592 and distinguished himself in battle, and in 1603, the thirty-sixth year of King Seonjo, he served as Governor of Gangwon Province while concurrently holding the post of Army and Navy Commander. The building has a five-bay front and a two-bay side, with a hipped-and-gabled (paljak) roof whose gable end takes the shape of the Chinese character 八 ("eight"), and it bears a wooden signboard written by Gang Se-hwang, pen name Pyoam.
