These are the woodblocks for Gukdammunjip, a collection of the writings of Ju Jae-seong (1681–1743) — a collateral descendant (a descendant of a branch line separated from the main line) of Sinjae Ju Se-bung — published by his descendants in 1908. Ju Jae-seong was a scholar and a leader of righteous-army volunteers in the mid-Joseon period. He showed outstanding scholarly talent from an early age, and when the rebellion of Yi In-jwa and Jeong Hui-ryang broke out in 1728, he raised a righteous army and distinguished himself. He later returned to his hometown (gohyang) and devoted himself to scholarship and to training younger students. After his death, his spirit tablet was enshrined at Giyang Seowon, a Confucian academy, in 1788. The contents carved on the woodblocks include the poetry and prose (siseo) and essays (nonmun) of the original collection, together with, in the appendix, documents relating to his righteous-army achievements and the Geogayobeom, a set of family ritual guidelines. The woodblocks were carved on both sides to print the two volumes of the Gukdamwonjip and its two-volume appendix, and number fifty-six in total.
