Hong U-gyeong Portrait
홍우경 초상 · 洪友敬 肖像

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krHong U-gyeong (1590–1625), whose clan seat was Namyang, courtesy name Gyeongbu and posthumous title Jeonggan, was born in 1590. In 1603, the 36th year of King Seonjo, at the age of fourteen, he married Princess Jeongin, daughter of King Seonjo and his consort Lady Min, becoming Sunuidaebu Dangwonwi, a title held by royal sons-in-law, after which his official rank eventually rose to Bongheondaebu. In 1618, the tenth year of King Gwanghaegun, when the movement arose to depose Queen Dowager Inmok, he denounced the plot led by Yi I-cheom and others, but was branded one of the 'Ten Villains' and exiled; he was reinstated after the Injo Restoration. He died on 4 June 1625 at the age of thirty-six, and was posthumously granted the rank of Surokdaebu. The portrait depicts him in his early thirties. The Hong U-gyeong Portrait shows him in official robes, turned slightly to the left in a seven-tenths left-facing pose, rendered simply yet with a clear, vivid expression. The background is a calm yet bright yellow. The portrait measures 56.2 × 28.4 cm; the face is rendered with keen observation and precise draughtsmanship — neither gaunt nor plump, with vivid, spirited eyes and sharply realistic whiskers — capturing well the character of East Asian portraiture. Unlike the neatly combed beard in Yun Du-seo's Self-Portrait, the beard here is rendered naturally in a curly, tangled form.
