Seongju Yi Ssi Portrait
KOGL Type 1Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

These are 13 portraits of ten ancestors of the Seongju Yi clan who served the state from the Goryeo period through the early Joseon period. All are copies made from the original paintings, depicting meritorious subjects who rendered great service to the state, each a full-length seated portrait in a chair. Originally twenty-two portraits were preserved together. In the 14th year of King Seonjo of Joseon (1581), a shrine hall was built at what is now Jasan-ri, Byeokjin-myeon, to house the portrait hall and the portraits, and they were gathered there, but some were stolen during the Imjin War. In the 10th year of King Injo (1680), the king bestowed on this shrine hall the name Ansanseowon Confucian Academy, and had the local Confucian scholars preserve the portraits and perform the ancestral rites there. Later, owing to renewed danger of theft and fire, they were moved here to Seongju-gun, Gyeongsangbuk-do, for safekeeping. These portraits depict Yi Jang-gyeong, Yi Jo-nyeon, Yi Seung-gyeong, Yi Po, Yi Won-gu, Yi Je, Yi Sa-hu, Yi Uk and Yi Seung-in. They are in good condition, but the date of production is not clear.
