Geumneungeungi-ri Rock-carved Banga Bodhisattva Statue
금릉은기리마애반가보살상 · 金陵銀基里磨崖半跏普薩像

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis rock-carved bodhisattva statue, 2.9 metres high, is carved in relief on a broad rock face in Eungi-ri, Eomo-myeon, Gimcheon, Gyeongsangbuk-do. The head wears a three-peaked crown (samsan-gwan), and the robe, which covers only the left shoulder, is rendered thickly. The right hand rests on the knee with the back of the hand facing upward, while the left hand, palm upward, rests on the left knee. The right foot is raised onto the left knee in the half-lotus (banga) posture, and the figure sits on a pedestal carved with lotus petals. Seated on a lotus-shaped pedestal with one foot resting on a single lotus blossom, this Banga Bodhisattva continues the tradition of the Pensive Bodhisattva images of the Unified Silla period; however, the style of the three-peaked crown and the somewhat unrefined treatment of the robe's folds suggest that it was made in the early Goryeo period.
