Tongdosa Temple, together with Haeinsa Temple in Hapcheon and Songgwangsa Temple in Seungju, is one of the three great temples of Korea; it was built in 646, the fifteenth year of Queen Seondeok of Silla, by the Vinaya master Jajang. Anyangam Hermitage stands at Anyangdongdae, one of the eight scenic sites of Tongdosa. The date of its first construction is unknown, but it is said to have been rebuilt in 1295, the twenty-first year of King Chungnyeol of Goryeo, by the great monk Chanin, and repaired in 1865, the second year of King Gojong of Joseon. Its main hall is also known as Bosangam, and it has a three-bay front and a two-bay side, with a hip-and-gable roof whose gable end forms the shape of the character 八 (eight). Although not large in scale, the shape of the bracket sets supporting the roof gives it a sense of stability, making it a building in the late Joseon architectural style.
