Petroglyphs refer to images of symbols, objects, animals and the like that prehistoric people carved into the surface of rocks or cave walls, and are regarded as the product of shamanistic rites praying for abundance and productivity. The Gaheung-ri Petroglyphs are carved on the same rock as the Gaheung-ri rock-carved Buddhist Triad, 10m below it, measuring 1 to 1.5m in height and 4.5m in width, and were carved during the Bronze Age. Using a technique of pecking with a bronze tool, three to five lines were connected horizontally, though their meaning remains unknown. This technique resembles the rock carvings at Yangjeon-dong in Goryeong and at Cheonjeon-ri in Ulsan.
