Seated Hwasun Ssangbongsa Temple Geungnakjeon Hall Wooden Amitabha Buddha
화순쌍봉사극락전목조아미타여래좌상 · 和順雙峰寺極樂殿木造阿彌陀如來坐像

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a seated wooden statue of Amitabha Buddha enshrined in Geungnakjeon Hall of Ssangbongsa Temple. It originally formed a triad with flanking statues of Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva and Mahasthamaprapta Bodhisattva on either side, but around August 1989 the two flanking statues were stolen, and the present ones were made afterward as replacements. The wooden seated Amitabha Buddha has an almost square face and a back that is slightly stooped. The head is covered in tight, snail-shell curls, and the short neck bears the three creases, lightly incised, a conventional mark of a Buddha's neck. The drapery covers both shoulders, its folds distinct yet full-bodied. The right hand is raised and the left lowered, with the thumb and middle finger touching on each hand, and the figure sits with the right leg crossed over the left. This statue was made in the twentieth year of King Sukjong's reign (1694), and its carving style closely resembles that of the wooden triad enshrined in Daeungjeon Hall, which is a Jeollanam-do Tangible Cultural Heritage.
