This stone lantern stands in front of the three-storey stone pagoda below Daejeokgwangjeon Hall at Haeinsa Temple, and is a fixture used to hold a light during Buddhist ceremonies. Centred on the light-chamber stone that holds the lamp, it has a three-tiered base below and a roof stone and finial above. The tall square base stone has two eye-shaped decorative niches carved on each side. The lower support stone above it has a step of about 6 cm, followed by an eight-petalled lotus design. The central pillar was newly made at a later date, and it is unfortunate that its original form can no longer be seen. The upper support stone bears a lotus design that mirrors the one below. The octagonal light-chamber stone has the Four Heavenly Kings carved in relief on four of its faces, with windows cut into the remaining four. The roof stone is likewise octagonal, its sloping faces slightly concave, giving the eaves a curved profile. A finial of several small ball-shaped ornaments crowns the top. With every part except the base stone forming an octagon, this is a typical example of the style, and it dates from the Unified Silla period.
