Haeinsa Temple, which houses the Tripitaka Koreana, was built in 802, the 3rd year of King Aejang of Unified Silla. Its main worship hall, originally a two-storey building called Birojeon, was rebuilt in 1488, the 19th year of King Seongjong of Joseon, and renamed Daejeokgwangjeon Hall. It subsequently suffered several fires and no longer retains its original appearance; the present building was rebuilt in 1817, the 17th year of King Sunjo, and underwent a major repair in 1971. It measures five bays across the front and four bays along the side, with a hip-and-gable roof whose sides form the shape of the character 八 (eight). Inside, Vairocana Buddha is enshrined at the centre, flanked by the bodhisattvas Manjusri and Samantabhadra.
