Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis text is also known in short as the Surangama Sutra or Neungeomgyeong. Its basic teaching holds that the Buddha's words are not to be merely understood intellectually but personally realised and internalised as spiritual power, and it is a sutra that monks must study as an essential part of their training. It was translated by Pāramiti, an Indian monk from central India who rendered the ten-volume Surangama Sutra at the Jeji Monastery in Guangzhou in the first year of the Shenlong era (705) of Tang China, and annotated for easier understanding by Jiehuan of Song China; it was then translated into Korean at the Directorate for the Publication of Buddhist Scriptures, by order of King Sejo. This appears to be a later impression, struck later from the same woodblocks, of a wood-block edition. The characters and format used in it formed the basis for the Directorate's edition. It is also of great help in estimating the printing date of other, undated Eulhaeja movable-metal-type translations of this text — Eulhaeja being the metal type cast in the intercalary sixth month of 1455, after Prince Suyang had had Gang Hui-an write out the model characters that spring.
