These are the printing woodblocks for the Sok Zizhi Tongjian Gangmok (a continuation of the Zizhi Tongjian, or Comprehensive Mirror for Aid in Government, arranged in the gangmok format of outline and detailed commentary), written by Donggang Kim U-ong (1540–1603) while he was in exile at Hoeryeong, to which he had been banished in 1589, the 22nd year of King Seonjo, after being implicated in the Gichuk Purge. Kim U-ong was a civil official of the mid-Joseon period and a disciple of Nammyeong Jo Sik. He passed the civil service examination in 1567 but, prevented by illness from taking up office, did not begin his official career until after 1573. He was exiled to Hoeryeong because, when the Gichuk Purge broke out, he was implicated on the grounds that he had studied together with Jeong Yeo-rip under Jo Sik. In 1597 he served as Rector of the National Confucian Academy and as Vice Minister of Rites; two years later he relinquished his post, and he died the following year. The work survived only in manuscript form until it was published by royal order in 1771, the 47th year of King Yeongjo. The woodblock edition was carved and printed at Cheongcheon Seowon (a Confucian academy) in 1808, the 8th year of King Sunjo, arranged by Confucian scholars acting on royal command. The book records 408 years of Chinese history, from the first year of Emperor Taizu of Song (960) to the first year of Emperor Taizu of Ming (1368).
