Jinjucheonggoksa Temple Hanging Scroll Case
진주청곡사괘불함 · 晋州 靑谷寺 掛佛函

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is the case that houses Cheonggoksa Temple's Yeongsanhoe gwaebultaeng (National Treasure No. 302), a gwaebultaeng being a huge Buddhist painting hung outdoors for large-scale ceremonies. The Yeongsanhoe gwaebultaeng depicts the scene in which Sakyamuni Buddha preaches the Lotus Sutra on Vulture Peak, and shows nine Buddhas and bodhisattvas. Sakyamuni stands at the centre, filling the picture, with the bodhisattvas Manjusri and Samantabhadra standing to either side holding lotus branches, and behind them Sakyamuni's two chief disciples, Kasyapa and Ananda. It was made in 1722, the second year of King Gyeongjong of Joseon, by the monk-painter Uigyeom, and the technique used to render the Buddha's face and the folds of his robes is characteristic of Buddhist paintings of the period. The case itself is sturdily built of thick wooden boards, with metal fittings attached at each corner and an iron ring fitted to the rectangular body to make it easier to carry.
