Eight Scenes from the Life of the Buddha of Gyeongguksa Temple
Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr · no licence stated

This Buddhist painting was made in 1887 through donations from court ladies (sanggung), painted by Boam Geungbeop, one of the leading monk-painters active in Seoul and Gyeonggi Province in the late nineteenth century, together with Geumun Sunmin, Bonggyu and Jonghyeon. It depicts the Eight Scenes from the Life of the Buddha, highlighting only the most important moment within each scene. The content of each scene is conveyed effectively, the overall composition is stable, and the restrained use of blue lends the work a sense of refinement. It is therefore a work representative of the new iconography and style of the monk-painters of the Seoul and Gyeonggi region in the late nineteenth century.
