Garyebuchwe Printing Woodblocks
가례부췌책판 · 家禮附贅冊板

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krCompiled during the reigns of King Seonjo and King Injo by An Sin (1569–1648), this is a practical manual of etiquette based on Zhu Xi's Family Rites but adapted to Korean custom. An Sin was a scholar of the mid-Joseon period who, when the Japanese invasions of Korea broke out, joined the forces of Kim Si-min and distinguished himself in numerous engagements. After the local village school was destroyed by the fighting, leaving students with nowhere to study, he gathered like-minded colleagues, rebuilt the school, and encouraged the students to continue their education. Earlier works centred on family rites were too voluminous and hard to obtain, and the fighting of the Japanese invasions had destroyed most of the surviving texts, leaving scholars devoted to ritual studies without adequate sources. This is why these printing woodblocks were made: to restore rites that had grown lax during the war, An Sin drew on Zhu Xi's Family Rites and the ritual discourses of Korean Confucian scholars to compile the text before having the woodblocks carved. The work opens with the author's own preface, followed, from the revised edition onward, by explanatory notes, a bibliography of more than thirty cited works, and a table of contents. Because it was produced in the aftermath of the Japanese invasions, it is valued as a useful source for understanding the norms of ritual observance at that time.
