When Samyeongdang, the monk Yujeong, was dispatched to Japan in 1604 as a peace-negotiation envoy, he is confirmed to have been granted a 'samyeonggi', a banner symbolising the bearer's military command. The full title given to that samyeonggi was 'Daeseongyo Deunggye Uibyeong Daejanggun Ijopanseo Gyeomjiuigeumbusa Yukgunmundochongnyeong Songun Samyeong Yujeong Daesa Samyeonggi', but the object itself no longer survives. The Samyeonggi of Samyeongdang at Pyochungsa Temple, Miryang, is unlikely to be the one bestowed by King Seonjo; it is presumed instead to have been made sometime after the 19th century, as an object connected with memorial rites for Samyeongdang. As can be seen from its inscribed title, 'Sadaeseongyo Haeng Ijopanseo Daegwangbogukchungnokdaebu Yeonguijeong Yangguk Daejang Samyeongdang Tongjegunsamyeong', this banner can indeed be identified as a samyeonggi.
