Gosanjeong Pavilion
고산정 · 孤山亭

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is the pavilion of Geum Nan-su (1530–1604), a scholar of the mid-Joseon period and a disciple of Master Toegye. In 1564, the 19th year of King Myeongjong, he had already built a pavilion called Seongjae in Yean, where he devoted himself to scholarship, before going on to build Gosanjeong at Gasonghyeop, one of the scenic sites of Seonseong (present-day Yean) at the time, naming it Ildongjeongja. Gosanjeong has three bays across the front and two bays on the side; it is a hip-and-gable roofed building whose side profile is shaped like the Chinese character for eight (八). Around the wooden floor of the central bay are ondol-heated rooms on either side. The scenery here is so outstanding that Master Toegye and many other scholars came and went without cease, and poems by both Master Toegye and Geum Nan-su survive from this place.
