White Porcelain Underglaze Cobalt Blue Landscape Figure Design Square Bottle

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a typical late Joseon-period (19th century) underglaze cobalt-blue square bottle, made by joining four flat panels together. A separately made neck, narrowed at the middle, is attached to the top of the rectangular body. On each of the four sides a single cobalt-blue line borders the edge, within which a landscape-with-figures scene is painted in a pictorial style showing foreground, middle ground and distance. The shoulder, narrowed as if its corners had been pared away, is likewise bordered with a cobalt-blue line enclosing a simplified scrolling arabesque design. The cobalt colour is somewhat dark, and the whole body is covered with a glaze carrying a pale bluish tinge. The base is flat, and after the glaze was wiped away it was fired supported on fine sand. This piece is a typical example of the late Joseon cobalt-blue square bottle; although its decoration is somewhat simplified, it shows a stage in the changing style of landscape design, and both its glaze colour and clay body clearly display the characteristics of official kiln (bunwon) white porcelain of the late Joseon period.
