A memorial gate stele (jeongnyeobi) is erected at the entrance to a village to honour the conduct and spirit of a loyal subject, filial child or virtuous woman; this stele was erected in the mid-Joseon period for Bae Sun, who ran a blacksmith's forge in this area. Bae Sun was gentle by nature and deeply filial, and being devoted to learning as well, he became a disciple of Yi Hwang (pen name Toegye). As Toegye's only commoner disciple, when his teacher died Bae Sun wore three years of mourning dress and, fulfilling every duty of a pupil, even fashioned an image of his teacher from iron in his memory. In 1615, the seventh year of King Gwanghaegun, he was honoured as a loyal subject. The stele's body stands on a plain base stone and widens slightly towards the top. It was first erected in 1649, the 27th year of King Injo, by his grandson Bae Jong, and was re-erected with the inscription "loyal subject" added by his seventh-generation maternal descendant Im Man-yu in 1695, the 21st year of King Sukjong. The village name Baejeom-ri was given by residents after Bae Sun's death, when they built the memorial gate.
