Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThese are relics of General Jamwa Choe Jin Rip (1568–1636), who raised a righteous army during the Japanese invasions of Korea (the Imjin War) and, for his achievements, was honoured as a second-class Meritorious Subject of the Seonmu Wonjong order. Choe Jin Rip was a military official of the mid-Joseon period who, together with his younger brother Gyejong, raised a righteous army during the Imjin War. He passed the state military examination in 1594 and was appointed Bujang, a military post, but declined it owing to illness; he did not take up official service until 1607, when he was appointed Dochongdosa. In 1636, while serving as the Yeongjang, or garrison commander, of Gongju, he met the Manchu invasion (the Byeongja Horan) and died fighting valiantly. The relics include a command sword about 1m in length, a haeyuseo (a document recording the handover of military command between outgoing and incoming officials), an ongnojam, a jade hat ornament marking the general's rank, a jade belt, 165 woodblocks of the Jamwa Silgi, his collected writings, a hopae identification tag, an inkstone, a candlestick, a brush holder, yeongnak hat-string ornaments, royal edicts (gyoji), patji certificates, various royal proclamations, deeds for the sale of land and slaves, a document dividing property among his children, household registers (hogudanja and junhogu), and other old documents. This heritage, made up of such diverse relics, is valued as important material for research into the Imjin War and the society of the time.
