This is a portrait of Gamgodang Gwon Hui-hak (1672–1742), a military official of the late Joseon period. Gwon Hui-hak was enfeoffed as a Meritorious Subject after suppressing the Yi Injwa Rebellion in the fourth year of King Yeongjo, 1728, and this portrait is thought to have been painted sometime after that. It is a full-length seated portrait showing the subject turned slightly to the right, wearing a samo (official's hat) and official robes, with both hands neatly tucked into the sleeves. The samo is rendered in meticulous detail, and the breast of the robe bears an embroidered rank badge decorated with a cloud-and-crane design. The face is depicted with finely detailed whiskers that define its contours, while the eyes and eyebrows are drawn upturned, conveying the bold bearing of a military man. Although not the work of an outstanding painter, it may be considered a piece that fully captures the subject's character and individuality.
