Gugaam Hermitage
구가암 · 九佳庵

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krGugaam Hermitage is a jaesil, a memorial hall built for ancestral rites, erected in 1825, the 25th year of King Sunjo of Joseon, by relatives led by Yi Han-jeong, a great-grandson of Yi Je-gyeom (1683–1742), the second son of Yi Dong-pyo, in order to protect Yi Je-gyeom's grave. Ancestral rites and family affairs were discussed here, and local scholars are said to have gathered to compose and discuss poetry. The building measures six kan across the front and three kan along the side, with an elaborate hipped-and-gabled roof whose sides splay out like the character for 'eight'. The kitchen, rooms and pavilion form an L-shaped layout, and the pillars of the pavilion, which juts out at the front, show an ingenious touch in that the spacing between them varies.
