Donggang River Village School
동강서당 · 棟岡書堂

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krDonggang River Village School was founded by Donggang Yi Hui-jeong, a distant collateral descendant of Toegye Yi Hwang. It is said to have been built in 1620, the twelfth year of King Gwanghaegun of Joseon, though an inscription carved on the building suggests it was actually erected around 1649, the twenty-seventh year of King Injo. It trained many Confucian scholars, and after the enlightenment period it served as a private academy; following the Japan–Korea annexation it offered instruction equivalent to the two-year curriculum of the ordinary schools of the time. The building measures four bays across the front and two bays to the side, with a hipped-and-gabled (paljak) roof whose roofline resembles the character 八 (eight) when viewed from the side, and the front is fitted with a wooden-floored hall (daecheong). It is now used as a meeting place for the Jinseong Yi clan of Odong.
