Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThese are relics of Jeong Gi-ryong (1562-1622), pen name Maeheon, a mid-Joseon military official who won great merit in overcoming the national crisis of the Japanese invasions of 1592 and 1597. General Jeong was the founding ancestor of the Gonyang Jeong clan. His original name was Musu, but after passing the military service examination in 1586 he changed his name to Giryong at the king's wish. When the Imjin War broke out in 1592, the 25th year of King Seonjo, he held the rank of byeoljang (assistant commander) and defeated more than 500 Japanese soldiers at the Battle of Geochang; he then took command of Gonyang fortress and blocked the Japanese advance into the Honam region. When the Jeongyu War broke out in 1597, the 30th year of King Seonjo, he was appointed commander of the campaign against the Japanese, won a great victory over Japanese forces at Goryeong, and captured enemy commanders. He ended his life in Tongyeong, Gyeongsangnam-do, and was afterwards enshrined at Chungnyeolsa Shrine in Sangju, with the posthumous title "Chung-ui" (Loyalty and Righteousness). The relics of General Jeong were kept by the Jinyang Jeong clan until 1989, when they were moved to the Gyeongchungsa Memorial Hall in Hadong, Gyeongsangnam-do, where they are now stored and displayed. They comprise gyoseo (royal edicts), his long sword, and yuseo, orders issued by the king when granting an official appointment.
