This is a reduced-scale version of the iconography of the 1844 Guardian Deities Painting (sinjungdo, a painting of the guardian deities who protect the Buddhist dharma) of Bongeunsa Temple, and a typical example of the sinjungdo paintings that were popular in the Seoul and Gyeonggi region during the nineteenth century. Gold leaf was used, notably on the incense burner and the patterns of the garments, and the fine, meticulous detail of the work reflects well the trends in Buddhist painting of the period.
