Standing Cheongdo Painting Lidded Box Cheolli Stone Amitabha Buddha
청도합천리석조아미타여래입상 · 淸道合川里石造阿彌陀如來立像

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis Buddha statue stands in Hapcheon-ri, Hwayang-eup, Cheongdo-gun, Gyeongsangbuk-do; the body and the mandorla, the halo symbolising the light radiating from the Buddha, are carved from a single stone. The head is covered in small snail-shell curls of hair, above which rises a topknot-shaped ushnisha. The face has a gentle, approachable expression and gazes straight ahead. The robe, worn covering both shoulders, clings closely to the body and further accentuates its full figure. The folds of the drapery are simply rendered, yet appear soft and elegant. The right hand rests at chest height, while the left hand is lowered, lightly grasping the hem of the robe. The oval mandorla is divided by a thick incised line into a halo around the head and one around the body. The statue is presumed to date from the ninth century, the period when Tang-dynasty style was absorbed into Unified Silla and became firmly established there.
