KOGL Type 4Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

This house was built in 1686, the 12th year of King Sukjong, by Jeong Hyeong-cho, who held the minor office of jangsarang and used the pen name Sansujeong; the present buildings were rebuilt in 1924. The complex consists of an anchae (main women's quarters), a sarangchae (men's quarters) and a daemunchae (gate quarters); an inner sarang wing has since been demolished, and the remaining structure has been partly altered. The buildings are set on a slope with a high stone foundation, the anchae placed on the higher inner ground of the site and the sarangchae on the lower, outer ground. The anchae is a rare example in the southern regions of Korea of a "D"-shaped (digeut) plan: a three-purlin structure with a gable roof and single eaves, based on a straight, four-bay-wide, two-bay-deep hall, with the end bays at both sides projected forward to form the "D" shape; a wooden floor runs around the outside of this plan, fitted with a gyeja-style curved balustrade. The sarangchae is called "Sansujeong", after the pen name of Jeong Hyeong-cho. The gate is a raised (sotdae) gate of three bays across the front with a gable roof, with a room and a storeroom of one bay each on either side of the gateway. Descendants of the family currently live in the house and are responsible for its maintenance and preservation.
